Round neodymium magnets in nuclear magnetic resonance instrument

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is a nuclear physical phenomenon. As early as 1946, block and Purcell reported this phenomenon and applied it to spectroscopy. Lauterbur published MR imaging technology in 1973, which makes nuclear magnetic resonance not only used in physics and chemistry. It is also used in the field of clinical medicine.

Magnetic resonance imaging requires a strong uniform magnetic field, which is generated by the magnet. Magnet is the most important and expensive part of MR equipment. At present, there are two kinds of magnets: permanent magnet and electromagnet, in which electromagnet is divided into two categories: normal conduction and superconducting.

Permanent magnet materials (such as round magnet magnets) can maintain magnetism for a long time after magnetization, and the magnetic field strength is stable. Therefore, the magnet is easy to maintain and the maintenance cost is the lowest. Permanent magnets used in magnetic resonance equipment include alnico, permanent ferrite and round neodymium magnets, among which round neodymium magnets have the highest magnetic energy product and can reach the maximum field strength with less dosage (23 tons of alnico are required to reach 0.2T field strength, and only 4 tons are required if round neodymium magnets are used).

The disadvantage of permanent magnets such as round neodymium magnets as main magnets is that it is difficult to achieve a field strength of 1t. At present, the field strength is generally less than 0.5T, which can only be used in low-frequency magnetic resonance equipment.

However, when permanent magnets such as round neodymium magnets are used as the main magnet, the magnetic resonance equipment can be designed into a ring or yoke shape, and the instrument is in a semi open form. This structure is a great blessing for children or people with claustrophobia.
